Roddick emphasized Nadal’s excellence on grass, reminding everyone that the 14-time Roland Garros champion has won Wimbledon twice. The American, however, also expressed wariness about Nadal’s preparations following the radiofrequency procedure on his left foot.
Nadal first won Wimbledon in 2008, following an epic battle against then five-time champion Roger Federer. The Spaniard won the Championships for a second time in 2010, defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets in the final.
While the terre battue is undoubtedly Nadal’s best surface, where he has posted 474 wins and just 45 losses (91.3%), the King of Clay also has a good record on grass (71-20, with a win percentage of 78).
With his record-extending victory at Roland Garros earlier this month, Rafael Nadal is, for the first time in his career, the reigning champion at the year’s first two Majors. Theoretically, he is is well on his way to an historic Calendar-year Grand Slam.
But the revelation about the injections he received on his chronically injured foot during the Roland Garros fortnight, coupled with the radiofrequency treatment he eventually underwent, have cast doubt over his participation at Wimbledon.
The AFP recently reported that the Spaniard’s uncle, Toni Nadal, believes Nadal will play at Wimbledon.
In addition, a Marca article reported on Monday that Nadal had begun training on the grass courts of the Santa Ponca Country Club in Mallorca.
